TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri described ensuring stability and security as the main need in Iraq following the collapse of the so-called caliphate of Daesh (ISIL or ISIS).

Speaking to IQNA on the sidelines of the 13th meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Jabouri said cleansing Iraqi territories form Daesh elements was a great victory and precious achievement.

“The Iraqi society needs stability and security after (the defeat of Daesh) and this can only be achieved through the participation of all groups and political parties,” he added.

Daesh began a terrorist offensive in Iraq in 2014, overrunning territory and brutalizing people there.

The Iraqi army and volunteer forces soon launched operations to retake occupied territory and eliminate Daesh.

Victory in those operations was declared on December 9, 2017. But pockets of Daesh terrorists and potential sleeper cells continue to have a presence in Iraq.

Asked about formation of coalitions by some Iraqi parties and political groups ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections later this year, Jabouri described it as a sign of “election enthusiasm” that is a positive trend.
